You will need some fine wool in tops, 18-21 micron and a selection of decorative fibers. Svetlana is using viscose (rayon) fibers, they are the best. You may also use different silk fibers, especially pulled silk fiber sliver, silk hankies, wool and silk yarn.
You will need a mild dishwasher liquid, bubble wrap and a synthetic netting (mosquito net). Svetlana is using laminate underlay for making stencils. You will need a spray bottle and a towel.
Svetlana is using the electric sander for felting. If you definitively dislike it, you may use these techniques without the sander.
How to make a realistic image using fibers?
Svetlana starts with a short overview of her creative kitchen (Introduction).
Recently, Svetlana has switched from free hand "drawing" with fibers (shown in her first tutorial) to stenciling.
Free hand technique is time consuming and difficult for people without previous experience in drawing. Some people have "fear of blank sheet", and stencil is a best "medicine" against it.
Using stencils, you can easily make perfect lines and contours and create professionally looking images. They can look like needlepoint embroidery, applique or gobelin tapestry. Stencil will help you to find right lines and proportions and to create a balanced composition.
Using stencils, you can also quickly make a lot of similar elements.
Svetlana makes her own stencils and will show you in Part 1 of this video tutorial how to modify your photos or drawings for this purpose.
The most challenging features of felting are shrinkage and intermingling of fibers. You must consider that your image will become smaller and will tend to deform after felting. There are several secrets of a beautiful image and I will share them with you.
Svetlana is using special self-made prefelts (shown in Part 2) and special non-aggressive felting techniques (Part 4) in order to minimize deformation and get clean images.
Svetlana's felting is like traditional crafts, like embroidery, drawing, beading or patchwork…
It can be called "relaxed felting": no big tables, buckets of soapy water. The main process takes place on a small table, you can sit with your family and watch TV or talk. You need a big table and soapy water only when assembling the parts.
Technically, Svetlana has created a lot of variations of her method. We present them to you in Parts 1-10 of the video tutorial. Each part represents a separate project.
Svetlana's stencils may be divided into three groups: single stencils, puzzle stencils, module stencils. You may choose one of these techniques or combine them.
Svetlana's techniques are good for both thin and thick felts, for thin shawls and thick carpets, just not forget to start with samples and think about the proportions between the base wool and decorative layers.
